INRNE Network and Information Technologies

The network, at present unique for Bulgaria, is built on high performance switches and fiber optic cable and thus interconnects 12 buildings of the "7th Kilometer" BAS campus where the main physical sciences institutes (INRNE, Institute for Solid State Physics, Institute of Electronics, Institute of Astronomy, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, and the Central Laboratory for Solar Energy and New Energy Sources) of the Academy are located. The result is a fast reliable local area network infrastructure with more than 700 PC and work stations, covering the whole campus with very well connection to the global Internet and especially to its Bulgarian part. Now the emphasis shifted to the organization of the magement of the network and to its use to provide high quality network services to the users.

The basic network equipment installed comprises 5 state of the art high performance switches providing fast, efficient connectivity and allowing for easy centralised management. The existing LANs in the five largest buildings, where the switches are located, are interconnected at a speed 100 Mbps and the rest at 10 Mbps through hubs with a fiber optics port. A new high reliability and capacity server was installed and configured. It has 4 processors, 512 Megabytes of RAM and provides ample disk space with RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) array.

A subscription for access through the World Wide Web from Institute's the LAN to the INIS bibliographic database as well as on-line access to the full text of the journals of the American Physical Society subscribed by the library are arranged.

The project is realized within the frames of the cooperation of INRNE and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna in accordance with the joint project CONET between the BAS and JINR. The leading role from the Bulgarian side in the design, building and implementation of the network is played by INRNE.
